House Resolution – H.Res. 175 – on the Baha’is in Iran

The United States House of Representatives introduced resolution H.Res.175 regarding the persecution of the Baha’is in Iran.  The resolution was sponsored by representatives Mark Kirk, James McGovern, Brad Sherman, Dan Burton, Bill Foster, Maurice Hinchey, Frank Wolf, and Jim Moran.

House resolution introduced condemning the persecution of Baha’is in Iran

On February 28, 2008, U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk (IL – 10th district) introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives condemning the persecution of the Baha’is in Iran. H. RES. 1008 is the tenth congressional resolution since 1982 on the Baha’is in Iran.

Congressional Critics Blast Iran on Human Rights

Voice of America reported the U.S. House of Representatives debate on three resolutions dealing with political and human rights issues in Iran.   One of these condemned the Iranian government’s treatment of the Baha’i community in that country. You can read more about it here.

The persecution of Baha'is in Iran has been taking place since the religion began there in the mid-nineteenth century. More than 200 Baha’is were killed in Iran between 1978 and 1998, the majority by execution, and thousands more were imprisoned.More
