House resolution introduced condemning the persecution of Baha’is in Iran

State Department calls for the release of three young Bahá’ís

Sean McCormack, U.S. State Department spokesman, issued a statement yesterday expressing deep concern for the tragic death of an Iranian Kurdish student detained by the Ministry of Intelligence. U.N. General Assembly expresses “deep concern” about human rights in Iran

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution expressing “deep concern” about “ongoing systematic violations of human rights” in Iran. This is the 20th resolution that the General Assembly has passed on this issue, which was adopted by a final vote of 73 to 53, with 55 abstentions.

    Some 300,000 Baha’is live throughout Iran, making the Baha’i Faith the country’s largest minority religion. The persecution of Baha'is in Iran has been taking place since the religion began there in the mid-nineteenth century. More than 200 Baha’is were killed in Iran between 1978 and 1998, the majority by execution, and thousands more were imprisoned.More
