An Evening in Support of the Bahá’ís of Iran

Speaking to a crowd of over 1,400 people packed into The George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium on September 12, 2009, Dr. Azar Nafisi, best-selling author; Ms. Shohreh Aghdashloo, Oscar-nominated actress; and Dr. Dwight Bashir, Associate Director for Policy at the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, joined the swelling worldwide chorus speaking out for human rights in Iran. On this particular evening, their message focused on Iran’s long-suffering Baha’i religious minority.

On August 12th, 2009 the Bahá’í communities of the greater Bay Area held an event entitled “An Evening in Support of the Baha’is of Iran”  at the historic Herbst Theater in San Francisco to raise awareness of and generate publicity on the heavy persecution of the Baha’i community in Iran. Over 1,000 attendees, including local dignitaries, government officials, members of the press and Bay Area Bahá’ís and their guests, gathered to support the cause of justice for the community of Iranian Baha’is enduring persistent persecution.

On June 29, 2009, Baha’is in Los Angeles held an emergency public meeting to gather support for a U.S. congressional resolution against persecution of the Baha’is in Iran at the L.A. Baha’i Center. Los Angeles is home to the largest Baha’i population in the United States.
